Welcome to the Levittown Animal Hospital Blog. When I became a veterinarian in 2001, I never thought I would have an opportunity to speak to so many different people on a platform such as this. Even a few weeks ago I didn’t think that I would want to share what goes on [waaay] behind the scenes of my hospital or [deep] inside my head. But what I’ve come to realize is that dog and cat owners are fascinated by anything that is veterinary related. Well …either fascinated or grossed out. There doesn’t seem to be too much middle ground. Everyday things that I have come to take for granted still evoke a strong emotional response in laypeople: playing with an eight week old kitten, spaying a dog, getting pooped/peed on, putting a suffering pet to sleep -these are things I just did this morning.
Shortly after attending a high school reunion a few years ago, I received an email from an old classmate. He wrote that, as a veterinarian, I had the second coolest job of anyone in our class. The girl (I suppose I should call her a woman now) who had the coolest job was a pilot for American Airlines. Given that 90% of my high school classmates are physicians, lawyers, bankers and university professors …I can gladly accept second place.
Fast forward to this past weekend, and I’m suddenly inspired to share my world with anyone who wants to take a peek. Being a veterinarian on Long Island is certainly not a glamorous job, nor will it make me rich. But it is fun and challenging. I get to play with puppies and kittens every day, and my dog always comes to work with me. And while a dog or cat will occasionally pee on me, it really doesn’t bother me all that much. Overall I am a happy person with a stable recession-resistant career, and I absolutely enjoy what I do at work.
However, all that happy, warm and fuzzy stuff makes for a pretty boring blog. So while I intend to share a lot of those types of anecdotes with you, I’ll also include some of the reality-show moments of my life and career. I have also invited my staff (receptionists, veterinary technicians, and assistants) to share their stories and comments here as well. Hopefully we can learn a little more about ourselves along the way.
